Weird and awful fashion trends from 2019 – from fishnet bikinis to ‘prostitute’ bodysuit – Mirror Online
We’ve finally said goodbye to 2019, and while there were some great parts of the past 12 months we’ll be sad to leave behind – others, not so much.
The final year of the decade treated us to some, well, quite frankly weird and on some occasions just plain awful items of clothing.
Many online retails have been selling bikinis, dresses and shorts which shoppers would have to be VERY brave to add to their basket thanks to their revealing, bizarre and sometimes just baffling designs.
A ‘painful’ bodysuit that people thought ‘makes you look like a prostitute’, ‘hideous’ harness shorts with the crotch cut out and a fishnet bikini were just some of the most memorable fashion looks.
As we kick off 2020, we’ve had a look back at some of the trends and looks we’re very, very glad to leave behind in the last decade.
Faux wireless headphones sold as ‘fashion accessories’
Love your Air Pods so much that you can’t bare to take them off?
Good news – ASOS is selling faux wireless headphoneson their website as a “fashion accessory”.
The silver headphone earpieces are made of zinc and cost just £6.
‘Painful’ bodysuit that ‘makes you look like prostitute’
FashionNova is known for its bold outfits, but the ‘Here For Fun’ bodysuit was a bit too much for some people.
The description for the item, which comes in black and red, says it has a ‘high side cut’ – and they’re not kidding.
Shoppers described it as a “front thong” and have commented on how uncomfortable it must be to wear.
Many are also very sympathetic to the model for having to wear it, and others have gone as far as to say it makes her look “like a prostitute”.
The bodysuit is made from 95 per cent Polyester and five per cent Spandex. It costs $24.99, but can be shipped to the UK so don’t worry about missing out.
One shopper wrote: “Ahhh it looks painful wtf.”
Revealing Toy Story costumes that were ‘ruining childhoods’
For anyone not content with spending Halloween dressed as a sexy nurse or a sexy police officer this year had a slightly disturbing alternative in 2019 – Sexy Buzz Lightyear and Woody.
Online retailer Fashion Nova released a line of Toy Story-inspired Halloween outfits , showing our favourite cowboy and space ranger in a very different light.
With a price tag of around £48, even the Pizza Planet aliens are subject to a suggestive re-design..
The costumes proved a big hit and sold out fast, but not everyone felt the same way a one person simply commenting ‘childhood ruined’.
Another asked “I wonder if people really buy these and go trick or treating?” while a third commented ‘save it for the strip club’.
‘Bin bag’ skirt that you can’t wear any knickers under
ASOS baffled customers with a very, very daring black ace-up vinyl skirt, which was being sold for £20.
The PVC-style mini skirt, which is made by PrettyLittlething but sold on ASOS, was slammed by shoppers who compared the look to a “ripped bin bag”.
One wrote: “Don’t u hate it when ur binbag rips.”
Another shopped pointed out that it was not very practical as you wouldn’t be able to wear knickers under it.
‘Hideous’ harness shorts with crotch cut out
ASOS’s harness ‘shorts’ (if you can really call them that) captured shoppers’ attention in February .
People’s biggest problem with the £14 item is that they had absolutely no idea what it’s meant to be for.
Featuring big cut out panels around the crotch area as well as on the legs, the high-rise waist design is being described as a “major trend” on the shopping site and claims to give you “the confidence to express your individuality”.
People on social media joked that the item would be great for giving the wearer “extra pronounced leg bulges”.
Fishnet bikini
The fishnet bikini could be the most daring piece of swimwear trend yet (bold statement, we know) and it leaves very little to the imagination.
I Saw It First’s Green Fish Net Bra & Briefs Set , which is a bargain at just £10, is guaranteed to turn heads – but you’ll have to be very brave to wear it.
The material makes the whole thing rather see-through and the high rise bottoms add to the daring style.
Clear plastic shorts
Not wanting to leave our male readers out of the fun, how do you fancy some of these rather unusual shorts?
Made by Maverick Swimwear, the shorts are mostly see-through , but with neon lime green lining and a lime green drawstring.
The company’s website says: “The next generation of transparent beach shorts is here! Berlin waterproof transparent shorts lime leave it totally up totally up to you if you wanna wear a colourful statement speedo underneath or just go bare for fun!
“The polyester shorts come with neon lining that makes you pop our of the crowds!”
Cage trousers
They are made up of a few very thin strips of faux leather sewn together in the style ff a cage.
While many shoppers are baffled by the trousers, it seems they have been popular as they’ve been given the fashion company’s ‘Hurry, almost sold out’ label.
See-through skirt
Have you ever looked in your wardrobe and been disappointed that you didn’t own any clothing that was completely see-through?
No? Me neither.
But it turns out there are some people out there who really like the transparent look and and PrettyLittleThing is selling a whole range of clear clothing.
The online fashion retailer has a selection of items on their website which will allow people to “dare to bare” during the festival season.
But don’t worry if the skirt isn’t for you, as they also do a trousers version….
Massive, massive backpacks
Made in Japan by CWF, the bag is being sold by Plywood and due to its size, it doesn’t come cheap at $240 each (£191).
Bizarre news from Mirror Online
Officially named the “Backpacker’s closet” the massive accessory is meant to be ideal for camping or storing clothes in and is sold in three different colours – beige, olive and black.
The website’s hilarious product description reads: “It is an oversized size backpack of about 180L.
“It is ideal for storage of clothes and for storing futon and can be used instead of closet. If you live in a house with a small number of closets and you are having trouble with storage, you can also hide the things you do not want to show.”
Those inspired by this description might struggle to get their hands on one for a while though, as demand is so high, the backpacks have already sold out.
Crocs with mini mum bags attached
Just when we thought Crocs couldn’t get any worse, them made a version with bum bags attached .
This can be worn either on the front or behind the heel and we’re undecided which position is more ridiculous/hideous.
The official name of this new launch that literally no-one asked for is The Bespoke Pocket Clog.
‘Condom dress’
A purple ASOS dress was compared to a condom – and it’s easy to see why.
According to the online description, the purple Hanger tie front latex dress “holds you close” and is exclusive to ASOS.
The dress is made from latex and is see-through, with the model wearing large white pants in the photos and catwalk video.
The dress was originally on sale for £250 but it’s now on sale for just £178.
Shoppers are mocking the dress on social media, with one posting a photo of the dress next to a purple condom.
